Siren in the Cave - Squireboone Caverns - Indiana Creative Photography

What an iconic shoot for me. I took these towards the start of my journey into photographing people. Granted, I am one of those people that planned everything down to the light setup before I got there.

Squire Boone Caverns, located in southern Indiana, is an incredibly beautiful experience by itself. When we called to ask if we could drag photography lights and a model in a vintage wedding dress deep into the bowels of the earth, they seemed shocked! In hindsight, that was a much bigger task than I actually anticipated.

You’ve been waiting…

But before I show you the images, I’d love to speak a little bit about my art. My goal for this portrait experience was to create a cyberpunk themed set of images without the use of photoshopped backgrounds. It was a challenge for me as it required very precise light placements to make it work.

The biggest trick is balancing the levels of light so that you overpower the projector but now blow out details within the images. I have probably 40 hours into these projector projects.

Without further ado, enjoy!

What The Heck Is Clean Lighting Anyways?

If you've followed me (or my work) for a while you have probably heard me ranting on and on about clean light. Maybe you've planning to attend one of my workshops, but either way there is absolutely no doubt have heard me harping on about about "clean lighting'.

Seriously though, what does that even mean?

When we were all learning light, we probably used white lighting in our photography. It was easier in a way. Just set up a bunch of lights, point them somewhat in the direction of the subject... and click. Done!

As I found through my own journey, we eventually come head to head with more creative techniques and better ways to set up our lights. We're all growing and learning every day, and one way to mix things up is to use colored gels in our shots.

Of course that presents us with a whole new selection of new problems, especially when we want to use more than one light.

The problem with using multiple gelled lights is that they cast different colors on separate parts of our subject.

If you place your lights badly, the light starts to look very 'busy' and 'messy' incredibly fast.

But counter to that, take a look at this image here.

50mm vs 85mm - Which is the best focal length for portrait photography?

Tough question right?

I’m fortunate enough to have been a pro photographer for many years now. I shoot a wide variety of subjects, but they always seem to fall into the categories of portraits, lifestyle and fashion work. I’m always photographing people—no still life, product shots, or architecture. I know it's a bit silly to say that I always photograph people as a portrait and fashion photographer. That seem's like an obvious statement, but it has had a huge role for me in choosing the lenses I work with and invest in.

In addition to being a professional editorial and fashion photographer, I’m also quite involved in training emerging photographers.
